Ch-ch-ch-changes….

Posted by Vera in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

Lots of changes going on in the Matson house. The hubby is in an MBA program and will finish in the Spring. The kiddos are no longer in Elementary School and they are getting busier and busier. And I’m going back to work.

The idea of working for yourself and/or working from home is one that conjures up freedom, flexibility, and ease. Not so much. I’ve decided that in order to be an effective working mom, I pretty much have to work every day. It seems that there is no end to the many tasks I need to complete.

The past few weeks have been a crash course in website management. I’ve been working on my new photography website. I’ll post the link when it’s ready for viewing. In the meantime, you’ll see a few changes around this personal blog as I transition away from photography here and use this site for my family blog and my hobbies of scrapbooking and cardmaking. (uh, now that I’m working, how will I have time for my hobbies!?!?)

Now that it’s fall, I’m hoping to jump back into the WIWW fun too. I’ve pulled out my favorite sweaters and boots, and it’s finally starting to cool off a tiny bit here. Hopefully, I can work in some time to take some more self portraits. I feel so silly taking photos of myself, but I learn so much about myself, my photography, and which outfits look best.

Now, it’s time to get back to work!

Savor Summer

Posted by Vera in Photo a Day | Leave a comment

Summer is winding down and I have mixed emotions. I love summer. I always have. I’ve never had a job where I had to work in the summer, so summer has always been a vacation for me. As a mom, I savor the long, lazy days with my kids and I love letting them play all day and just be kids.

On the other hand, I can’t get anything done. Even though my kiddos are old enough to entertain themselves and fix breakfast for themselves, they don’t always make the right choices, so I try to keep them busy and keep them eating healthy meals. I’m not a perfect mom, but I really try to do my best.

The end of summer is sad for me. I realize that my kids are one year older and are one year closer to leaving me. My daughter will be 13 in September and she’s growing up so fast. I want to bottle her youth and innocence and maintain her childlike enjoyment of the simple things in life. My son is 11 and he’s outgrowing his little boy activities and exploring pre-teen interests too. Sigh.

I know that we all crave the order that school days bring. My kids will be happy to see their friends and I will be happy to have my quiet, productive mornings. But until school starts next week, we’ll savor the last few days of summer and I’ll take plenty of photos to remind me of our long, lazy days.

I’m still here!

Well physically I’m here, but mentally, I’m back in SC at the beach.  I grew up going to the beach every summer for two weeks.  I always wanted to even move to the beach, but I never did.  But every Spring, I start itching to get back there, so I plan a trip every chance I get.

Now that we’re living in TX, trips to the Atlantic aren’t as frequent as I’d like.  We do go to the Gulf Coast several times a year, and there are features of the TX beaches that I like, but I still prefer SC beaches for their beauty and quite frankly, for sentimental reasons.  It just feels right to me.

I have a zillion photos to sort, edit, and scrap, but here’s one that sums up how I feel back home in the Carolina’s.

WIWW — The Reader’s Digest Edition

Posted by Vera in WIWW | 18 Comments

As much as I love participating in WIWW with The Pleated Poppy, it’s a little bit time consuming.  So, I’ve taken a few pics over the last few weeks and I’m posting an abbreviated version this week!

As the weather gets warmer, it gets harder to cover up my weaknesses!  LOL I’m so much more comfortable in my jeans, boots and sweaters.  Now that it’s getting really hot here in Houston, I’m wearing more sleeveless tops and I’ve got to work out and firm up my arms!  Arggh!  Thank goodness for short-sleeve cardigans!  Ha!

This outfit is bright!  Skirt is from Down East Basics, tee from Target and wedges from Stein Mart.
I spent most of the day indoors so I wore my skinnies from Lauren Conrad, wedges from Marshalls, cap sleeve tunic from Francesca’s and cardi from the Loft.
I wore this outfit to an evening pool cookout with friends.  Skirt from Francesca’s, tee and cardi from Target and flip flops with turquoise beading from Dillards.
Shopping with a friend.  Target sundress and cardi and Anthro wedge sandals.

Went to a meeting with other photographers in the area.  Old Navy rolled cuff pants, Anthro top, Stein Mart wedges.Went to lunch with friends.  Talbot sleeveless top, Anthro blazer (love!) Anthro wedges, Old Navy pants.  I took the shoulder pads out of the blazer.  I refuse to go back to the 80′s.  If you’ve already been there, don’t go back!

Went to my daughter’s class party. Calvin Klein tunic via TJ Maxx, Lauren Conrad skinnies, Macy’s sandals.

Since I don’t have toddlers in the house anymore…

I borrowed one!

My friend Stephanie is a great hobby photographer and she wanted to get some updated shots of her adorable two-year-old son.  I happily tagged along and snapped a few shots too.  Here’s a cute one.

Long Time No Scrap!

Posted by Vera in Scrapbooking | 3 Comments

My poor neglected scrap room is a disaster. I’ve been slowly getting it put back together and I’ve been looking at my magazines and online galleries for inspiration. I need to do something creative and just play with my scrap supplies. In the meantime, I thought I’d post another layout I’ve done somewhat recently. I’m hoping that by posting something scrappy it will make me want to whip out some more layouts!

WIWW — Back in the Saddle Edition

Posted by Vera in WIWW | 13 Comments

Hey everyone!  I’m back with another installment of What I Wore Wednesday where lots of bloggers link up with The Pleated Poppy and post what we wore over the last week.  Lindsey at The Pleated Poppy started this as a way to be more accountable for what she wore as a SAHM/WAHM and to stop spending all day in her pj’s.  I can totally relate!  Now all different types of bloggers are joining in:  SAHM’s, fashion bloggers, women of all ages and more!

I have enjoyed participating simply because I’ve learned so much about what works for me and what I really look like in my outfits.  So often, I wear something all day only to take a picture and see how awful I really looked.  Now, whenever I go shopping, I take pics with my iphone and if I buy something new, I take pics of myself wearing the new clothes and really decide if it’s the right look for me.

Now, on to this week’s outfits.  I only have a few that were blog worthy.  One of my outfits last week was ok, but the cropped pants were really dowdy on me, so I vainly decided not to post that pic.  I also missed a few days of photos.

I love this outfit, but the skirt is a little full. I’m thinking of taking it in slightly on each side seam. Cardigan from Talbots, tank and flats from Target, and skirt from Francesca’s.

Boyfriend from Talbots, floral top from Target, necklace was a gift, pants from Old Navy, and the shoes that are hidden in the grass are from Stein Mart.

This summer, green seems to be my color. I have a lot of it. The dress and cardi are from Stein Mart. Shoes are from Harolds. I wore this outfit to church.

This last outfit is a top and skirt from Stein Mart. I really prefer wearing skirts in the hot weather. I think I just look better in skirts than I do in shorts or pants.

Well that’s it for this week. Thanks for stopping by!

Note to Self: Take More Pictures of Myself With My Kiddos!

The most recent photo that I have of myself with my kids (not including the annual frustrating holiday photo) is from 2009. I really should update this!

Happy Mother’s Day!
